Advanced strategy
The Don: train the right version of the test.
A practical starting point for athletes building toward the full The Don HERO WOD. Use the plan, then adjust with a qualified coach when needed.
Choose your current level
Strategy overview
Your work starts with the right dose.
Do it as prescribed. The light barbell makes it easy to start too fast, and the time you gain there is usually lost on the pull-ups and burpees.
Recommended gear
- Chalk
- Jump rope sized for double-unders
- Hand grips (for pull-ups and knees-to-elbows)
Pacing
Advanced pacing strategy.
Control the start, stay aware of your movement quality, and give yourself a chance to finish with intent.
Big but repeatable sets, for example 2 × 33
Short transitions between stations
Keep a steady pace through the burpees and finish on the rope
Movement
Make the reps count.
Use these cues to retain the purpose of the workout while respecting the ability you bring to it today.
Box jump: step down rather than rebound
Knees-to-elbows: break before your grip fails
Thrusters: one fluid motion from the squat to lockout
Double-unders: a relaxed, steady rhythm
Scaling
Keep the intended stimulus.
Scaling is not an afterthought. It is how you stay in the workout, practice useful positions, and build toward what comes next.
Scale with a reason.
Choose an option that keeps good form and preserves as much of the workout’s character as your current ability and available equipment allow.
As prescribed
Add a weight vest only if your gym programs it that way
Coach notes
Advanced success tips.
Tip 01
Protect your grip: the swings, knees-to-elbows and pull-ups all use it
Tip 02
Check your rope length before the workout
Tip 03
Note your time and any scaling so you can compare next time
