The CrossFit community was shaken by the tragic news of the passing of Lazar Đukić, a 28-year-old elite athlete from Serbia. On August 8, 2024, during the opening event of the CrossFit Games in Fort Worth, Texas, Đukić tragically drowned in Marine Creek Lake.
Lazar was a rising star in the sport, known for his infectious optimism, beaming smile, and incredible work ethic. A former water polo player, he was a formidable swimmer, which made the circumstances of his death even more shocking to fans and fellow competitors. He was a two-time CrossFit Games athlete, and his passion for the sport was evident to everyone who watched him compete.
The first event of the 2024 Games was a 3.5-mile run followed by an 800-meter swim. Đukić was a favorite to win the event, given his strong swimming background.
